Required Items

Full-day camps & advanced level classes

  • Riders must bring a working bicycle. Please review this document for tips on preparing a bike for riding, then consider taking your child’s bike to a local bike shop in advance of camp to ensure it’s working properly. See our Bike Buying Guide if you have questions about buying a new bike.
    • If we must perform maintenance or repair work to get your child’s bike in riding condition when she/he arrives at camp we will charge a $50/hour repair fee for any labor beyond 15 minutes, and will not warranty or guarantee our work.
    • We will charge our cost plus 10% for any repair/maintenance supplies (e.g., tubes, cables, chain, etc.) needed for your child’s bike during our programs.
    • Camp & class participants: you must bring a tube suitable for your bike’s wheel/tire size.
    • Flat pedals are preferred. Riders using toe clips or clipless pedals must demonstrate to Wheel Kids staff they are able to safely engage and disengage the pedals before riding with their team.
  • Helmets are required by Wheel Kids and by state law. See Event Rule #2 for our helmet policy.
  • No open toe shoes and no clothing that can become entangled in the bike – we recommend sneakers and long pants or capris. Please note that sunburn is more likely with short pants and t-shirts.
  • Please provide a hearty lunch every day (please note: the kids get very hungry), along with water and snack. To avoid potential food allergy problems we don’t provide snacks; we rely on you to supply sufficient food for your child. Please provide us any necessary information about allergies or dietary restrictions.
    • If your child will receive a lunch from our lunch vendor you may want to send along a few snacks. As noted above, the kids get very hungry!
  • Layered clothing is a must for our region’s mix of sun, wind and fog. Rain jackets and rain shoes/boots are recommended if rain is in the forecast. Long/full fingered gloves may be desirable on colder days. Extra camp t-shirts can be purchased at registration, or any time by contacting us, if they’re available.
  • A sturdy backpack will be needed throughout the day for lunch, water, clothes, etc. No shoulder bags; large fanny packs are strongly discouraged. Ensure in advance that the backpack fits and does not sag on the bicycle’s rear wheel.
  • Sunscreen. Since families have products they prefer we do not provide sunscreen for event participants.
  • Hand Sanitizer. Similar to sunscreen – you probably have a type you prefer and you may not like ours.

Lessons & Classes

  • Bike, helmet, and appropriate clothing as listed above.

Recommended Items

We suggest the following items as they can increase riders’ comfort and safety: cycling gloves, sunglasses and a bike bell. Knee and elbow pads may make your child more comfortable, especially for Two Wheelers Club and lessons, and possibly for MTB Development. A hand towel may be desirable for sandy feet if we visit a beach.

Leave at Home

Anything you’re concerned might get damaged or lost; anything of value you can’t secure at all times; things that weigh down your backpack and make riding more difficult. Cyclometers and mounted mobile phones are not allowed during Wheel Kids events; we require these items to be kept in pockets or backpacks while riding with us. Wheel Kids is not responsible for lost or damaged personal items.

Bike locks are not required. If we need to lock up bikes our coaches will carry cables and locks. If your child locks their bike you are responsible for the key or combination.
